What do you attribute to your success in life? Churchills day to day routine

According to Churchill – I have reached the pinnacle.

The only difference between us has been levels of achievement.

I still put on my T-shirts back to front.

I occasionally put my slippers on the wrong feet deliberately.

In terms of efficiency and restricting unnecessary activity, I am the master.

But lets look at another master : Churchill Himself.

Churchill’s day to day routine

Lets have a look at what he did all day and compare it to me :

Despite all this activity Churchill’s daily routine changed little during these years. He awoke about 7:30 a.m. and remained in bed for a substantial breakfast and reading of mail and all the national newspapers. For the next couple of hours, still in bed, he worked, dictating to his secretaries.

At 11:00 a.m., he arose, bathed, and perhaps took a walk around the garden, and took a weak whisky and soda to his study.

At 1:00 p.m. he joined guests and family for a three-course lunch. Clementine drank claret, Winston champagne, preferable Pol Roger served at a specific temperature, port brandy and cigars. When lunch ended, about 3:30 p.m. he returned to his study to work, or supervised work on his estate, or played cards or backgammon with Clementine.

At 5:00 p.m., after another weak whisky and soda, he went to bed for an hour and a half. He said this siesta, a habit gained in Cuba, allowed him to work 1 1/2 days in every 24 hours. At 6:30 p.m. he awoke, bathed again, and dressed for dinner at 8:00 p.m.

Dinner was the focal-point and highlight of Churchill’s day. Table talk, dominated by Churchill, was as important as the meal. Sometimes, depending on the company, drinks and cigars extended the event well past midnight. The guests retired, Churchill returned to his study for another hour or so of work.

My daily routine

Arise at about 8.15am.

Have a cup of tea. Toast.

I may not have read the newspapers in bed like some but I was not some lazy sluggard getting up at 11am.

I also did not start drinking whiskey as soon as I arose.

I am happy to give it a try, like some of my readers obviously do.

1pm Unlike Churchill, I still haven’t had a drink.

5pm I have my tea/supper.

8pm I have already had my main meal for the day. Beating Churchill by 3 hours.

10pm I am in bed, 2 hours or more before Churchill. Who,unbelievably, was so

inefficiently organised that he would often be still working at this time.

Perhaps if had not been drinking all day he may have got some more work done.

The war may have ended a bit sooner without the  need for american help.

Isn’t everyone tired of hearing about that?

  1. I’m not as successful as I would like, but what I have achieved is due to the old boring “showing up.” Reliability counts for a lot. It’s undervalued on the lists of attributes because it doesn’t sound splashy.

  2. I guess the key to this is to become someone who supervises others and has meals prepared for them instead of someone who is generally supervised by others. I don’t imagine starting the whiskey earlier is going to help much.
