You know, I meet young people, and they want to act and they want to be famous, and I tell them, when you get to the top of the tree, there’s nothing up there. Most of this is nonsense, most of this is a lie. Accept life as it is. Just be grateful to be alive.
Anthony Hopkins
I was always stumped when I saw famous people being interviewed.
The interviewer would say that they have a certain responsibility.
They were a role model, they were influential.
They had a moral duty to act a certain way.
I would say – but it’s David Beckham? – what do I care?
For a while every man and his dog in England got David Beckham haircuts.
Apart from me.
I grow mine until it gets to long, then cut it – keeping the cost per cut right down.
That can’t be true can it? People just copy off people they’ve heard of?
Hallowed ground
It’s called the Halo effect.
It’s not just getting the same haircut as famous people.
It’s believing what they say because they are familiar.
We think we know the person, so we accept what they are saying as the truth.
Advertisers line up and pay millions to these celebrities and social media influencers.
Then we hand over our money to whatever dumb product of the day.
The opposite of the Halo effect is the horn affect.
When people attribute bad things to people they see on social media or TV.
Doesn’t stop it from being stupid though does it?
The position of most people is that they don’t do it. They do.
They avoid the difficult journey of bringing such thoughts into their conscious mind.
Like the similar idea that it is only other people that are stupid.
I personally smashed that idea to pieces.
Is a Hopkin just a small hop?
It is a question that Anthony Hopkins should be asked.
However, I’m on the Tony train for this. Most of this is nonsense.
If you’ve read my other posts, I’m sure you will agree.
It is perhaps an irony that,as we get older and more objective, we are more likely to suffer from the horn effect.
This is another go at 1 liner weds.
Thanks to my special guest Anthony Hopkins.
Omg omg omg. I am going to write a post and tag you in it because this reminded me of the thing.

While Anthony Hopkins is a delight, I wouldn’t buy anything just because he said he liked it. He’s been recommending fava beans and a good Chianti for years and I have yet to agree.

I can honestly say, I’ve never tried to look like anyone famous. I’d worry about confusing the assassins.

I was wondering where I’d left my thing. Why have you tied it up? Are you some kind of thing pervert? If so, ring 07782 317750, before the bell tolls.

Isnt it not where you left your thing but where you put it that has been the source of all your problems?

Well I think you should, just as an experiment, you’ll end, perhaps like a thought based Malaysian latah. I bet no-one has ever said that before. You heard it here first 🙂

This one rang particularly true for me. I cannot understand why people give celebs this sort of power — and why they consider the lot of them default role models is a mystery.

Particularly when you realise that copying off them ends up making them super rich. Building a ‘brand’ and adding 500% to the price because of brand value….

Are we into the horn effect as a substitute for the horny effect that afflicted many when they were younger?

I was thinking along those lines, thankfully I’m much older now 🙂
