The half life of I love you

24 MAY 2018, 12:34 PM

In the beginning was the word..

Whoah, hold on, fast forward a little bit.

As Jesus said heaven and Earth will pass away but my words will never pass away.

I have to assume he wasn’t being arrogant. Perhaps it was the idea of words that was eternal.

I like to think I mean what I say. I can often take my time before I reply. Your word should have power, it should be dependable, like carbon. An element which takes millions of years to decay.

The measure of how long elements take to decay is called a half life .

Usually used to measure radioactive decay but it can also be the time required for any specified property (e.g., the concentration of a substance in the body) to decrease by half.

For example the half life of coffee is 4-6 hours.

What is the half life of I love you?

The meaning of the words I love you certainly hasn’t changed since I said it last. I meant it. If nothing has changed, why should I have to say it again?

Do the feelings the words express decay over time?

And you know, while I was thinking all these things, my wife said ‘ I love you’

I was in the middle of mentally listing the half life of various elements on down. Vanadium, Uranium, Nobelium,Francium,Diddlium,Dumptium, Bashful and Doc.

A process that should not be interrupted.

I have learnt a valuable lesson though.

When you hear I love you , you have to say it back.

It’s just easier.

What is the half life or your words?

Barbeques as an alpha interplay with the magic of alpha rated meats

Seeing the Florida families on holiday – you can smell them first.

You know they’ve started up the barbeque.

They try it once,usually.

It seems to be too much of a bother. Too much faff.

But why ? Why are barbeques even a thing?

I think that when these BBQ are set off within a family unit, there’s no need to ‘display’ or show off.
Faff is faff in a family. Families don’t need it.

In larger gatherings there’s usually a man in charge of the barbeque.

One meat head.

On the surface it seems to be about feeding people. But is the subtext really a social display with a heirarchy?

Where the Alpha displays his status, king of the meat heads. Food quality doesn’t matter.

Within the social group the alpha food has to be received as if it were good.

“What’s that Joe?”

“It’s the incinerator 2500. Takes 25 big boy steaks with an easy flip option.”

“What that you got Joe? The big girlie 250?”

“How many does that take again?”

“3 girlie burgers. Do you use it in your doll house?”

“What’s that Joe?”

Yes. I only wear a thong at a barbeque.

“A real man should be splattered with meat juices.”

“You hear that Joe?”

“That’s the sound of the hair on my entire body slowly burning.”

“You ever seen a lady,Joe?”

“Neither have I.”

“Come stand next to me,Joe”

“Catch some mansplatters.”

“Flip those my burgers Joe, a real man uses his fingers, like my mother did”

( This interlude was brought to you out of the Alpha real society)

When life gives you lemons….

Don’t open a lemonade shop like my father did.

Everybody’s getting lemons all the time. For free.

What was he thinking?

People are so damned positive these days, lemonade is everywhere .

You know what happened?

My father filled his van with his useless lemons and drove off a cliff.

Here’s a photo of him relaxing in happier times :

Your damned positivity killed my father.

So when life gives you lemons think about that.

The hamster wheel of happiness versus the Hedonic Treadmill

05 MAY 2018, 08:20 PM

Like a hamster is made for a wheel, humans are made to be active to maintain happiness.

But what Hamster is made for a wheel?

They only run round and round because somebody put them in a cage.

Many humans are also encaged, running on a different wheel, either running to or from happiness -the result is the same. Through travelling we never arrive.

Is there a different choice? A way of being happy recognising that we don’t need to have a destination to create happiness?

It has been observed that regardless of successes or failures in life, an individual returns to a standard level of happiness. The economic term for this is the hedonic treadmill. Modified by Micaheal Eysenck, into hedonic treadmill theory, how a person success in life only gives a fleeting gain to happiness. The happiness soon returns to normal levels.
But wait.
The idea of happiness returning to normal after either a good or bad event, surely involves an element of being stationary.
We are not walking to stay in the same place for our happiness, our happiness finds a stationary level regardless of what we do.
So I’m putting forward that a more realistic idea to demonstrate our happiness is this :
The hamster wheel.

Regardless of how we run, how much effort we put in,our happiness increases only temporarily. We soon return to our standard individual level of happiness.

If our happiness is measured on a hedonic treadmill what happens if we stop walking?

We fall off.

Yet the hedonic adaptation the theory tries to illustrate shows us how people’s expectations and desires rise together , so that no matter how hard you try your happiness level does not change permanently.

For the standard individual level of happiness, no movement is needed. This isn’t effectively represented by the hedonic treadmill.

Knowing this, can we increase our happiness?

By standing still, effectively managing our expectations, by understanding our happiness as being like a wheel?

Ye suffer from yourselves.
None else compels, None other holds you that ye live and die,
And whirl upon the wheel, and hug and kiss Its spokes of agony,
Its tire of tears, its nave of nothingness.
Sir Edwin Arnold.

If economics is about accurately tracking human activity to label and predict, it is easy to see how walking was the initial metaphor used to describe hedonic adaptation. An economist is used to thinking in terms of human movement.
What happens if I want to sit down and NOT have a cup of tea?

That’s right. I’m not buying anything.

Ok. Mr Smarty Pants, it’s not my seat either.

Is it not better for our own personal happiness to think of being stationary?

Happiness is something we create in our minds as the famous poem by Helen Steiner Rice goes, it’s not something we search for and so seldom find.

We are on a hamster wheel of happiness. Fooled into running for more ,never actually gaining ground.

Trying to catch the empty promises of modern Life.

If I define my own happiness as like a hamster wheel, what happens?

I stop running.

Instead of trying to catch happiness, happiness may catch up to me.

Excerpt from Wikipedia about hedonic adaptation :

The hedonic treadmill, also known as hedonic adaptation, is the observed tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes.[1] According to this theory, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness. Brickman and Campbell coined the term in their essay “Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society” (1971).[2] During the late 1990s, the concept was modified by Michael Eysenck, a British psychologist, to become the current “hedonic treadmill theory” which compares the pursuit of happiness to a person on a treadmill, who has to keep walking just to stay in the same place.[citation needed] The concept dates back centuries, to such writers as St. Augustine, cited in Robert Burton’s 1621 Anatomy of Melancholy: “A true saying it is, Desire hath no rest, is infinite in itself, endless, and as one calls it, a perpetual rack, or horse-mill.”[improper synthesis?]

The hedonic (or happiness) set point has gained interest throughout the field of positive psychology where it has been developed and revised further.[3] Given that hedonic adaptation generally demonstrates that a person’s long-term happiness is not significantly affected by otherwise impacting events, positive psychology has concerned itself with the discovery of things that can lead to lasting changes in happiness levels.

Helen Steiner Rice :

Happiness is something we create in our mind,

it’s not something you search for and seldom find.

It’s just waking up and beginning the day,

by counting our blessings and kneeling to pray.

It’s giving up thoughts that breed discontent,

and accepting what comes as a gift “heaven-sent”.

It’s giving up whining for things we have not.

It’s knowing that life is determined for us,

and pursuing our tasks

without fret, fume or fuss.

For it’s by completing

what God gives us to do,

that we find real contentment,

and happiness too.

King of the sky, the hawk screaming across the morning

17 MAY 2018, 06:08 PM
Armed with an early sleep, I sat outside watching the mocking bird tweak it’s tail.
To no affect.
A king of the sky day.

The thunder rolled in, perhaps soothing a hangover.

Looking through the cellophane of an old lucozade bottle, my view may have looked like that.

If todays success is measured in lumps of doing very little, today I will succeed.

It’s one of those things

There was a day, maybe a Tuesday, when nobody knew what anything was.

We didn’t even know it was a Tuesday .

If I said to you “What’s that?”

You wouldn’t know. I was just making sounds as far as you could tell.

It didn’t mean anything.

It wasn’t until years later,if I asked again “What’s that?”
You could answer.
“It’s one of those things”

In the early days of making a sound and attaching it to a thing, a lot of things did not have a sound.
There wasn’t a committee and no chance of camel design.

Difficult to get through your day when nobody knew what anything was.

But,years later, we’ve got it sorted.

I ask you again “what’s that?”

“It’s an effing tree you idiot”

Now we’re operating at an advanced level.

“Things” are getting done.
Sounds become things become words become thoughts become insults become satisfying.

What day is it?

“Tuesday, dickhead”

Everything is going so well, we’re building houses, inventing computers and all kinds of stupid shit.

But what kind of tree is it?

Eff off. I’ve got work to do.

There are so many words for even just one thing, and there are so many tones of voice.
When the sounds are made, it can mean the opposite of what the sound should mean.

Those olden days when you didn’t know which way was up or even what was up, seem pretty good after all.

I think I realise what has gone wrong.

Everybody is talking nonsense.

Sound after sound after sound for no reason.

But what to do about it?

Earplugs.

I can now sit in my house, that I gained from the utilisation of knowledge of things, in complete silence.

What’s that?

The voices in my head?

That’s another story.

Reason to be earthbound, not knowing

08 MAY 2018, 04:12 PM
I’m not going to partake in telling others how to live their lives. But is it wrong to play “Missionary” and try to help people?

For every Jesus there is a Judas.

Meaning if you help in certain ways you will get a certain response.

Live your best life, if people ask you, answer.

If not, be kind as they find their own path.

But, for every fool that persists in his folly , and becomes wise. There is a man who holds wisdom dear finds himself a fool.

What philosophy do you believe in? Would others agree with it?

The Shakespeare quote sums it for me :

“There are greater things in heaven and Earth than are present in your philosophy,Horatio.”

Life can be a place of majesty and wonder, whose true meaning we can never define.

Imagine a soul.

Imagine that soul agreed to be earthbound.

But why?

The condition of being earthbound means that you cannot know.

Imagine a soul exists in the eternal knowing.

Knowing all day long, like dwarves singing their way to work.

Imagine the idea of not knowing.

The soul agreed to be earthbound, one day to return,in death.

To know one thing, that it cannot – Not knowing or being able to know.

Did butterly Sons and Butterfly daughters ever say…

25 APRIL 2018, 08:35 PM
Why can’t we fly in a straight line Daddy?

The Daddy says ‘Jeez, can’t you just fly without making it a problem’

‘Now let’s get home before we get eaten’

‘Do we have a home Daddy?’

Jeez…

That got me wondering.

But why don’t butterflies fly in a straight line?

It’s because they’re shit at flying.

Ok. My first answer is never my best answer.

It’s to evade predators. As their souls match the colors of their wings, the soul of any predator gains soul purity for any butterfly caught and eaten.

Ok. My second answer.. well I looked it up.

Pretty disappointing. Evolution. To avoid predators.

http://www.sciencefocus.com/qa/why-dont-butterflies-fly-straight-lines

Butterflies and moths use their wings for many purposes: for flight, as mobile billboards to advertise how poisonous they are, and to create camouflage patterns. So you would expect them to be less adept fliers than insects that have optimised their wing design purely for aerodynamics. But the butterfly’s erratic flight is actually an evolutionary tactic that makes it harder for any would-be predators to predict the insect’s flightpath. The more poisonous butterflies don’t need to carry out these evasive manoeuvres, and as a result these species tend to fly much straighter.

Fluid dynamics simulations that were carried out at Kyoto University in Japan last year showed that butterflies achieve their trademark swoops and tumbles by generating a lot of extra turbulence with each wing beat. And high-speed photography studies undertaken at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, reveal that they also constantly adjust their centre of gravity by shifting the position of their body and wings.

Monarch butterflies are so good at this that they can effect a 90-degree turn in less than a single body-length.

Working and shirking, words that fail to define me.

06 MAY 2018, 02:20 PM
For many years I worked in a local authority.

I observed others to see what they did, I aimed to emulate them and become the best.

A lot of time was spent chatting.

A lot of time was spent avoiding work.

So I devoted myself to wilfully avoiding my responsibilities.

To be the best at the game they all seemed to be playing.

I had been brought in as a replacement for Bill the box.

The staff members had genuinely drawn a face on a carboard box and called it Bill.

Anything they didn’t want to do, which was most of everything, went into the box.

I had a lot to live up to. I was mostly worried that I would be more socially awkward than Bill.

I would certainly not fall victim to the Japanese disease. This is defined as karoshi, meaning death by overwork.

Sitting at my desk, half asleep, I would often think of the word. It almost became a lullaby, karoshi, karoshi. Sounding like a gentle wave rolling up to the shore.

Smiling to myself, I would gently fall asleep.

I became a master at avoiding work, any of my official responsibilities.

Esquivalience is the word meaning the willful avoidance of one’s official responsibilities.

I was fortunate enough to attend an exhibition by Lillian Mountweazel in Dublin,in 2009. She was born in Bangs,Ohio and unfortunately died in an explosion while on assignment for combustibles magazine. The exhibition detailed her life and works.

Or should I say – her fictitous life and works. As I found out that day, a Mountweazel was a term created to describe fictitous words which are placed to protect against copyright theft.

For example, the first American dictionary available on cd rom had fictitious words placed in it.The idea being that the fictitous words could be used to demonstrate plagiarism in a prosecution for copyright theft.

Just like the word esquivalience. A fictitous word, that described my attitude to work perfectly.

But doesn’t it’s appearance in the dictionary make it a word?

What is my attitude to work if I’m not esquivalient?

On my last day at work, I slept late. By the time I woke up everybody had gone home.

I collected all my work together, and found a carboard box to put it in.

I picked up the felt tip and wrote ‘Bobby’ and drew a little face.

Bobby had a lot to live up to.

Proving Einstein wrong : The rebel fish

“If you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree then it will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid.

Einstein

I think Einstein has made a mistake here.

Now let me prove it.

The fish knows it is a fish. it is the human judging the fish.

The quote should say :

“If you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree then

It will live it’s whole life believing you are stupid”

As you are the one who is judging the fish stupidly.

In your face,Einstein.

The fish would not accept or even be aware of your judgment of it.

Who else demonstrated that Einstein was wrong today?

I can also categorically state that fish do not garner any self-worth from their tree climbing ability.

They are not depressed or affected by any human judgment.

It is the catching, cooking and eating that affects them the most.

if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree

This guy Einstein seems hopeless in my opinion.
